THE CLASSICS LIBRARY'S MAJOR SHELVING LOCATIONS

CLASS Reference

  • In the stacks across from the Circulation Desk.
  • Non-circulating.
  • Library Use Only.  
  • Cannot be desk or office charged. 

CLASS Stacks

  • A book may be marked "Library Use Only," but can be office or desk charged to UC faculty, Tytus fellows, and graduate students in Classics Only.

CLASS Oversize

  • A book may be marked "Library Use Only," but can be office or desk charged to UC faculty, Tytus fellows, and graduate students in Classics Only.

CLASS Journals

  • Bound Journals.
  • Stack level 5.
  • Non-circulating, but may be desk or office charged to UC faculty, Tytus fellows, and graduate students in Classics Only

CLASS Elephants

  • Stack level 4.
  • Non-circulating.
  • Library Use Only.
  • Cannot be desk or office charged (exceptions will be made for faculty who wish to demonstrate items in class).

CLASS Palaeography

  • Palaeography Reading Room, room 414A.
  • Non-Circulating. 
  • Cannot be desk or office charged (exceptions will be made for faculty who wish to demonstrate items in class).
  • Ask Library Staff for assistance.

CLASS Epigraphy & Papyrology

  • Epigraphy and Papyrology Reading Room, room 416.
  • Most books here are non-circulating, but not all. If non-circulating, it will say so in the book.  
  • Non-circulating items in this room cannot be desk or office-charged (exceptions will be made for faculty who wish to demonstrate items in class). 

CLASS Rare Book

  • Old editions and manuscripts.
  • Stack level 4. 
  • Non-circulating.
  • Cannot be desk or office charged.
  • Staff will retrieve books from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, M-F, for use on tables in the Circulation area. 

CLASS Audio-Visual Collection

  • Mezzanine in Room 417.
  • Ask Library Staff for assistance.

CLASS Maps

  • Map cabinet on stack level 6.
  • Library Use Only (exceptions will be made for faculty who wish to demonstrate maps in class).
  • Ask Mike for assistance.

CLASS Microforms

  • Stack level 6.
  • Ask Library Staff for assistance.

CLASS Glass Case

  • Non-circulating and cannot be desk or office charged (exceptions will be made for faculty who wish to demonstrate items in class).
  • Ask Library Staff for assistance.

German Dissertation Collection

  • On microfilm and print originals. 
  • Originals are housed on the mezzanine and are very fragile. It is strongly recommended that you use the microfilm copies.
  • Library Use Only.
  • Ask Library Staff for assistance.

THE CLASSICS LIBRARY'S CIRCULATION POLICIES

UC Libraries Materials

Undergraduates: 3 week loan with 4 renewals.
Graduate Students, Staff and Faculty: Semester loan with 2 renewals.
Desk and Office Charges: Classics Graduate Students, Faculty and Tytus Fellows may charge Classics Library materials to their desks or offices, including "Library Use Only" items which are stamped as such and may not be checked out to a personal account and removed from the library.
Loan period: 1 semester for monographs, 3 weeks for bound journals..
Exceptions: 
 Reference books, current unbound journals, elephant folios, the books in the Palaeography Reading Room, the books in the Glass Case, and the books in the Rare Book & Manuscript Room. 
Langsam or other UC Library Branches’ books must be charged to your personal account. 

Fines: Regardless of the loan period, a book may be recalled by another library user any time after 3 weeks. Fines for recalls are $1.00/day. If a book is not returned, you will be charged a $100 replacement fee + a processing fee after a grace period of one month.  

Number limit of item check out: 500 to personal accounts, 100 to desk or office accounts.

Requesting Books from Langsam, Other UC Library Branches, and SWORD

You can request books from the Langsam and other branches of UC Libraries, as well as Southwest Ohio Regional Depository (SWORD) to . SWORD is the regional storage facility that UC shares with several other OhioLINK libraries. 
Please use the "REQUEST" button in the upper left of the library catalog. You may select the Classics Library Circulation Desk, or any other UC Library Branch as the pickup location.
It normally takes 2-3 working days for the UC books, and about a week for SWORD books

to have the book sent to the Classics Library. 

OhioLink Books

Students: 3 week loan with 6 renewals.
Faculty: 6 week loan with 6 renewals. 
Note: All OhioLINK loans are subject to holds placed on the books by the owning library, but there is no recall mechanism. Fines are 50 cents per day for the first 30 days, with a max. of $50. 

Renewals of UC and OhioLink Books

You will receive email notices sent to your UC email account for books that are soon due or
books that have been recalled. 
To renew books to your personal account, please:

- visit "My library record" for online renewal. 
- bring the books to the Circulation Desk for in-person renewal. 

Renewal cannot be processed when you have no renewal left for the book, or the book has been requested by other patron.

OHIOLINK ITEMS

Use the OHIOLINK button in the Library catalog when:

  • You can’t find the book in UC’s collection.
  • Book is checked out on a personal loan (check the due date). 
  • Book is marked as missing. 

It normally takes 3-4 days to have an OhioLINK book sent to the Classics Library, but at times, it may take up to a week to get a book.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN ITEMS

If a book is not available through UC or OhioLINK, you can go through the Interlibrary Loan link on the Classics Library homepage to access ILLiad, the program used by UC to handle ILL requests. After you have set up a personal account, you can request books and articles and monitor the progress of your requests. The length of time it takes to get ILL requests varies, as does the loan period.
