Collection Donations Policy

The University of Cincinnati Libraries selectively accepts donations of books or other materials that support and enhance the University'€™s teaching and research. With the Libraries strategic focus on unique content and digital collections, we suggest that material not fitting in this category be offered to other organizations and institutions where they can be put to more effective use such as Better World Books or the Hamilton County and Cincinnati Public Library.

Non Charitable Donations - No value stated

ONLY Subject Liaisons or Sharon Purtee, Gifts Librarian, (513) 558-1019, have the authority to select material donations for the library collection. If a Subject Liaison or the Gifts Librarian has authorized the donation, it may be accompanied by a receipt of goods' form, filled out by the donor.

Upon receipt of donated collection materials, the items become the property of the University. The subject liaison or Gifts librarian will provide oversight to disposition of the materials. The Libraries reserve the right to determine the retention and disposition of all donated materials. Those materials not added to the collections will be disposed of at the discretion of the Libraries.

Charitable Donations - Value statements and appraisals

If the gift is accepted, and a donor desires a charitable contribution receipt, Christa Bernardo, the UC Libraries Director of Development, (513) 556-0055, must also approve the gift. Legal restrictions prohibit the Library from placing a value on donated materials. Any appraisal of the donation for income tax purposes must be made in advance by the donor.
