Undergraduate Research Summer Learning Community

About the program

In our learning community, students from diverse disciplines learn from one another while exploring topics related to research collaboration, communication and ethical codes of conduct. From these experiences, participants will build professional skills to support them through their research program.

Target Audience

Undergraduate student researchers are the primary audience, and all majors are welcome. While many participants will be part of a summer research program, some join to prepare for a future research opportunity. We welcome anyone interested in learning with us.

Participate In Person or Virtually

In-person participation is recommended for a better social experience. Coffee and pastries are provided each week.

What to Expect

Community meetings are hosted by a team of UC faculty, staff and graduate students. Each meeting has a central theme and a lead facilitator who organizes discussion topics and activities. Co-facilitators assist the lead facilitator and guide small group activities.

A few days before each meeting, you will receive a brief reading, video or assignment to orient you to the weekly topic.

Meetings follow this basic structure:

  • Welcome/Opening remarks (five minutes)
  • Small and large group reflection and discussion (20 minutes)
  • Activity or Case Study (15 minutes)
  • Activity or Case Study (15 minutes)
  • Large group discussion to develop consensus on best practices related to the topic (20 minutes)
  • Closing remarks (15 minutes)

Schedule

In 2025, meetings were held on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Doors opened at 9 a.m. for informal socializing.
