Borrow Materials

Who can borrow materials?

All University of Cincinnati students, faculty, staff, ELS students, emeritus faculty, and retirees, as well as patrons in good standing from affiliated institutions may borrow materials from University of Cincinnati Libraries.

All faculty, staff and currently enrolled students may borrow materials using their University of Cincinnati I.D. card (Bearcat Campus Card). Patrons may also use any valid picture I.D., such as a driver's license, to check out materials. Community borrowers and patrons with affiliated institutions (such as OhioLINK or SearchOhio) should present their institution's I.D. as well.

University of Cincinnati students engaging their programs in a fully remote model are called Distance Learners within UC Libraries. Distance learners have the same privileges as on campus students, correspondent to their status with UC. A graduate level distance learner would have the same privileges and access as a graduate student attending classes on campus.

Distance learners have a variety of options for accessing UC library materials and resources, both online and physical.

For online access, distance learners should begin at our Online Library. Once a distance learner logs in via Duo Authentication, this library guides access to articles and databases, as well as a search for physical materials available to UC students (including distance learners,) staff and faculty. Options include Electronic Journal Center and Electronic Book Center on OhioLINK and requesting articles via ILLiad

Distance learners seeking to access physical materials, such as books, have a few different routes to take. In state distance learners can request items via Ohio's two statewide consortiums, OhioLINK and SearchOhio, utilizing the Pickup Anywhere service, which allows, for example, a UC student who resides in Columbus to have a Kent State library book be sent to Ohio State for pickup.

Distance learners who unable to obtain physical items via OhioLINK or SearchOhio, or who are in a state other than Ohio, should contact the Collection Development Services and Engagement department at UC's Langsam Library for additional options regarding access and delivery. The department can be reached by phone at 513-556-1424.

Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library users are now members of SearchOhio and can borrow materials directly from University of Cincinnati Libraries with their CHPL card and a photo ID.

CHPL users can also utilize SearchOhio's catalog to request items from UC, and other Ohio institutions. Those requests are delivered to their local public library location.

Community Borrowers refers to non-UC borrowers, such as SWON Library members, UC Alumni Association members, Friends of the Library, Communiversity students, and many more. Community borrowers may access Langsam Library during the hours that The Desk at Langsam is open.

Users in these groups have the following privileges:

  • 5-item check-out limit
  • 3-week loan period with 1 renewal
  • On-site database access at public-access workstations

New users from Northern Kentucky University should first visit The Desk @ Langsam Library with their NKU ID to verify their access privileges and obtain a UC Libraries Borrower's Card. NKU users can check out up to five items for a three week loan period, with three renewals on items provided that the item is not needed by another library patron.

The Tower Society recognizes our donors whose lifetime gifts provide critical support to sustain growth and momentum for the university, creating vital opportunities to advance education, outreach and research efforts. Members of the Tower Society receive the following privileges:
