Description:

 drkoop.com is a commercial web site (not associated with the former Surgeon General by the same name) that provides an extensive resource of medical and health information.  If you can ignore the ubiquitous advertisements, this commercial site does offer an interesting and valuable resource of consumer related health and medical information.   The Health Encyclopedia provides comprehensive coverage of medical and health topics, and all topics are reviewed by health professionals.   Each topic includes an overview, symptoms, treatment and prevention section.  The news component is not well organized, but it is easily searched.  The drkoop.com site also includes an extensive video library, including hundreds of videos on a wide array of topics.

 This is a webography of over 700 selected web sites for a target population of health professionals and researchers, publishers and library communities.  Sponsored by AED/SatelLife, this site is one of the components of the AED/Satellife Global Health Information Network.  Essential Health Links is organized into three sections: General Health Resources, Specific Health Resources and Library and Publishing Support.  The General Health Resources section includes links to hundreds of web sites with dictionaries, disease classifications, directories of conferences and organizations, evidenced-based medicine, health news, image collections, health research resources and health statistics.  Also included in this section are hundreds of free full text eBook and ejournals.  The Specific Health Resources section contains similar content to the previous section but with a more specific focus, e.g., dermatology, diabetes and oncology.   The Library and Publishing Support section provides links to web sites helpful to health information users, including sites with content about Internet search and evaluation skills and authorship information.

 The Health & Wellness Resource Center provides an integrated collection of medical and health related magazines, journals, newsletters, pamphlets, reference tools and videos.  Included among the many reference publications in the Resource Center are several Gale medical references (including the 2007 edition of the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine), the Clinical Reference Systems Advisor series, a plethora of Harvard Special Health Reports, the PDR Family Guide to OTC Drugs and the PDR Family Guide to Prescription Drugs.  The Health & Wellness Resource Center also points to a wide variety of well respected health related web sites.

 Healthfinder.gov is produced and funded by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, the National Health Information Center and the parent agency, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.   Healthfinder.gov maintains a database of over 6,500 resources collected from over 1,600 government and non-profit organizations.   Included among its many and varied resources are an encyclopedia of health information, health news, a variety of finder tools (for finding health care providers, health centers and health organizations), personal health tools (including a health quiz, calculators and activity/menu planners) and videos.

This web site produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, the world's largest medical library, is a cornucopia of medical and health related information.   The NLM web site offers five tailored portals to health information: the Public, Health Care Professionals, Researchers, Librarians and Publishers.  Each portal is designed to provide convenient access to information used by each respective group of users.  Among the many tools and resources provided by NLM are Medline Plus (a repository of medical reference resources) and PubMed (a database including the venerable MEDLINE medical literature database and additional science research literature), Household products database (includes over 7,000 household products), Tox Town (an interactive guide to toxic chemicals), ClinicalTrial.gov (patient information about clinical research studies), NIHSeniorHealth and DailyMed (a database of drug information).   The NLM web site also is a significant source of information of research grants and funding for career development/training and community outreach programs.

NetWellness is a collaborative web site produced by the University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University and Case Western University.  This is a resource rich site that provides information about a very long list of health topics.  The information sheets provided on most topics includes an overview of the topic, anatomical information, complications, symptoms & tests, treatment, staying healthy info and "additional information" on the topic.  Netwellness also offers information on health centers and a medical reference library that includes a medical encyclopedia, six different Merck reference tools, Medline Plus (a repository of medical reference resources) and PubMed (a database including the venerable MEDLINE medical literature database and additional science research literature).  Netwellness also provides an email "Ask an Expert" service that enables consumers to anonymously address medical questions to the health professionals of the sponsoring institutions.
