Research
Experience for Women Undergraduates 2005
Homework Assignment
For this assignment you will research
a topic, find materials in the library and on the web, and write a short
summary paper on your topic. References must be included in proper
format in a bibliography at the end of the paper.
This assignment will be due to your
advisor Monday, July 11, 2005.
You will need Internet access
to complete the assignment. Computer
workstations are available in the Langsam, Chemistry-Biology, Geology-Mathematics-Physics
and Engineering Libraries as well as in computer labs in your respective
areas. John
Tebo can assist in Chemistry-Biology.
Angela Gooden can assist in
the Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library. Jim
Clasper is the Reference Librarian in the Engineering Library.
Remember to authenticate if you are off-campus and are trying to access subscription resources from a non-UC
Internet service provider.
-
Select a thesis or project topic
you are researching this summer. Begin your paper with a description
of the topic and the keywords you used to find information. See 7.
below.
-
Using the Library Catalog
find
at least one book on your topic.
-
Using the OhioLINK
catalog,
find a book chapter or conference paper on your topic by examining the
table-of-contents information. Limit your search results to the University
of Cincinnati so that you can view the book here, or request it from OhioLINK
if there is time.
-
Search Applied
Science and Technology Abstracts for information on your topic.
Find at least one journal article. Use "Find a Copy" or check "Full Text Journals".
-
Search a specialized database appropriate
for your subject area.

Search Web
of Science (Science Citation Index) (SCI). Find one article
which cites an article that you have already found, or that your
advisor has given you. If this is not possible, find an article by
the author of an article you have already found.
-
Write a one-page summary about the information
you have found, but in your own words. Do not simply cut and
paste abstracts or website text. (This would constitute plagiarism
without proper quoting and referencing.) This summary should follow
the introductory paragraph you wrote for 1. Include observations
evaluating the results of your searches.
-
Conclude the paper with a bibliography
of the six or more references, in a standard citation format (see Instruction
Online on the Engineering Library homepage).
Make sure your paper has your name
and your advisor's name.
