July 15 , 2005 - University Libraries plays a vital role in UC’s New Student Orientation as Langsam Library co-hosts an orientation session along with UCit July through August 2.
The library session introduces new students to University Libraries and focuses on key library services and resources. Students participate in a live-chat reference session, sample the technological resources available in the STRC (Student Technology Resources Center) and Multimedia Services, see how Self-Checkout works, and tour the Info Commons area and the 5th floor to see the book stacks and the Serials and Electronic Services Department. Not only do these activities illustrate the ways the library can assist students throughout their academic careers, but they also will help orient them to the sometimes overwhelmingly large physical space that is Langsam Library. The UCit session shows students how to access e-mail and Blackboard.
During Orientation, students are also be introduced to the 9 college and departmental libraries – Archives and Rare Books; Curriculum Resources Center; Classics; College-Conservatory of Music; Geology-Mathematics-Physics; Chemistry-Biology; Design, Architecture, Art and Planning; College of Applied Science; and Engineering. While time constraints prohibit touring all University Libraries, students are exposed to the facilities and collections through an exhibit of books, videos, maps, and more.
Those studying in Langsam Library July through August 2 should expect some disruption on the 4 th and 5 th floors, between 3:30-4:30pm, as groups of approximately 200-300 first-year students tour the facility and participate in summer orientation activities. The 6th floor will not be part of the orientation tour and will be available, as always, for quiet study and research. The Engineering Library, located in Baldwin Hall, and the Chemistry-Biology Library, located in Rieveschl Hall, also offer full library service and quiet study.
