October 7, 2005 - On Wednesday, October 5, 2005, University Libraries, the Department of Biological Sciences, the Department of Chemistry, the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, and the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost for Baccalaureate and Graduate Education, dedicated the Else L. Schulze Info Commons and The Oesper Collections in the History of Chemistry.
At the event, Dean and University Librarian Victoria Montavon, Dr. Guy Cameron, Head of the Department of Biological Sciences, and Dr. Patrick Limbach, Acting Head of the Department of Chemistry, talked about the significance of these two resources for students, faculty members, and researchers. Dr. William Jensen, Professor of Chemistry, gave the keynote address about the outstanding legacies of Else L. Schulze and Ralph E. Oesper.
Located in the Chemistry-Biology Library, the Else L. Schulze Info Commons contains 26 computers with specialized technology for use by chemistry and biology students and faculty. The Oesper History of Chemistry Collections were created by the endowment of former UC Chemistry Professor Ralph E. Oesper, and include over 10,000 books and journals, over 2,000 prints and portraits dating from 1600-1959, and historical chemistry apparatus.
