Off Campus Access and FireFox 3 Certificate Errors

FireFox 3 and Secure Sites
Changes have been made to FireFox to make it easier for users to see that they are on a secure site.

The University of Cincinnati Libraries

University Libraries uses self-signed certificates by default. This may cause an issue for users who are running FireFox 3.  Direct navigation to the Off Campus Access URL is blocked by FireFox 3 when self signed certificates are used.

We are alerting you to this change in behaviour so that you understand that there is nothing wrong with our site or your computer.

Self-signed certificates make your data safe from eavesdroppers, but say nothing about who the recipient of the data is. This is common for intranet websites that aren't available publicly.

Here is what you will need to do to stop the warning page from appearing every time you go to our site.

First, you will see this page.  Please click on "or you can add an exception".

FireFox Error Screen

Click on the "Add Exception Button".

FireFox Add Exception Option

Click on the "Get Certificate Button".

Add Exception Dialog

Click on "Confirm Security Exception Button".

You are now taken to Off Campus Access.

Off Campus Access - Information

The University of Cincinnati network infrastructure may affect the availability and access routes to some University Libraries resources for some of our off-campus patrons.

If you are...

    • Connecting from off-campus with UC as your Internet Service Provider
You should not experience any problems connecting to University Libraries resources.

    • Connecting via a non-UC Internet Service Provider
If you are connecting to the University Libraries pages from an Internet Provider other than UC, you have two options. You can install and run the VPN Client, available from UC, or login through University Libraries (see above "Login for Off Campus Acess").
